[ Listing C12 ] a gap on the city’s board

Contemporary dance classes in Leicester [ socks or bare feet · £9 flat ]

Contemporary here tends to arrive attached to something — a term to enrol on, a building with a reputation, a programme that began in September without you. This is the plain version: a hired room, a teacher, £9 a session, and no enrolment anywhere in sight. The list sets the start date.

Contemporary dance class in Leicester working a travelling phrase
Floor level

Weight down.
Breath first.

Contemporary starts lower than people expect: weight into the floor, breath running the phrase, and travelling that borrows momentum rather than fighting it.

No audition, no term, no September deadline

Name, email, mobile, postcode and one dropdown. That is the entire admission process, and none of it costs a penny. When enough people have registered an interest in contemporary, a central Leicester room is hired and the whole list receives one message carrying the day, the time and the address. Say yes then, or say nothing and stay listed for the next opening. There is no cohort you are joining late and no standard you are being measured against — the room is assembled out of people who all put their names down for the same missing thing.

Names from LE4 or out towards Melton Mowbray count twice over: they tell us who is coming, and they tell us which side of the city to hire in.

Under a minute of typing, and rather less exposing than an improvisation task.

There is no fee for joining the interest list — the room follows the names, never the other way round.

[ Act one ] the first month, honestly

Less mystique, more mechanics

The reputation — abstract, serious, faintly unwelcoming — belongs to the performance end of contemporary and not to the beginner end. What a first month actually contains is mechanics: how to hand weight to the floor and take it back without a thud, how a spiral travels up through the spine, how to fall a short way deliberately and still arrive standing.

Floorwork comes early because it is the cheapest place to learn momentum. Sliding down and back up on your own bones teaches more about control than any amount of standing repetition, and it is quietly the part most people enjoy once a first descent stops feeling like a collapse. Travelling phrases follow, short ones, assembled from whatever the group can already do.

Flexibility is an outcome here, not a ticket. Stiff hips, a desk-shaped back, a body that has not been asked to do anything unusual since school — all normal, all workable, and all far less visible in a beginner room than they feel from the inside. Where improvisation appears at all, it appears as a nudge rather than a spotlight, and the teacher reads the room before deciding how hard to push.

Music in a beginner room does less than people imagine. Much of the early work runs on breath and count rather than a track, because learning to feel your own timing before borrowing somebody else’s is what stops a phrase looking rushed. The music arrives once the phrase can stand up without it.

Leggings or joggers, a top that stays where you put it when you tip upside down, socks or bare feet depending on the floor. We do not sell or lend clothing, mats or pads of any kind — bring what is already in the drawer and nothing further is required.

on opening

This city is not short of good contemporary teaching. It is short of contemporary you can simply walk into. Nearly everything on offer wants a commitment shaped in advance — a term, a programme, a group that formed before you had heard of it. Reverse the order and the pressure evaporates. You pay for the night you attended and nothing beyond it, so a bad week costs you nothing at all and a good run costs precisely what it looked like it would. It also changes who is standing next to you: not people filling a slot on somebody’s timetable, but people who went looking for this and wrote their name down.

[ tempted? ]The list is the whole mechanism. One name moves it; two move it faster.

"I wanted this for roughly six years and kept missing enrolment windows by a fortnight. Joining a list instead of a course removed the entire problem — there was nothing left to be late for."

"First time down on the floor I braced for humiliation and got a room of adults all landing badly at the same moment. By the third session the descent felt like something I was doing rather than something happening to me."

Eight worries, answered plainly

Nearly all of it is the flexibility question wearing different hats. The beginner answer never changes: you are training it here, not proving it at the door.

Does any of this need previous training? +

None. Beginner sessions assume nothing and start from standing, breathing and weight. Prior training helps a little and its absence costs you nothing.

Why is there so much rolling around? +

Because the floor is the cheapest teacher of momentum. Going down and coming back up trains control faster than any amount of standing repetition.

What is the charge for one evening? +

£9, flat, with the hired room already covered by it. Nothing is sold in blocks and no membership sits behind the figure.

Are hamstrings a problem I should fix first? +

No. Range is built by attending, not before attending. Every exercise has a shorter version and using it is normal rather than a concession.

Is this the same thing as lyrical? +

Related but not identical. Lyrical leans on story and song; contemporary spends more time on weight, floor and the mechanics underneath the shape.

Will I be made to invent movement? +

Not against your will. Any improvisation is offered as a small task with an obvious opt-out, and it is the teacher’s call whether it appears at all.

What goes on my feet for this? +

Bare feet or grippy socks, decided by the floor on the night. Trainers mostly get in the way of the sliding this style depends on.

What decides when this class opens? +

The number of names on the contemporary list. Once hiring a central room makes sense, it gets hired and everybody hears at the same moment.
